About Reverend W Awdry
Originally an Anglican cleric by profession, Reverend W Awdry’s attempt to keep his son amused while he was suffering from measles unexpectedly made him a celebrated children’s book author. He created characters around which he wove stories for his son. His best known character is Thomas the Tank Engine, the main character of his popular “Railway Series” books. Other children’s fiction books he wrote are “Belinda the Beetle” and “Belinda Beats the Band”.
Family Life
His father Vere Awdry was the vicar of the Ampfield Anglican church in Hampshire, England. His mother’s name was Lucy. He had a younger brother named George. He was married to Margaret Wale, with him he had three children including Christopher, who also became an author and contributed to “The Railway Series”.
Achievements
He was honored with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1996.
Death
He died in his sleep on March 21, 1997 aged 85.
