About Richard Reid
Richard Colvin Reid is a British Islamist and terrorist. He attained notoriety as the "Shoe Bomber" after attempting to detonate explosives hidden in his basketball shoes while on an American airplane with about 200 other passengers.
Background
He was born in Bromley, London, and received his primary education from Thomas Tallis School, Kidbrooke.
Reid worked as a graffiti artist under the alias "Enrol" and was part of a gang during that time. He accumulated over ten convictions for criminal activities against people and property and served several sentences.
Bombing attempt & arrest
On December 22, 2001, he boarded US airline flight 63, which flew from Paris to Miami. After meal service, a passenger complained of a smoke scent in the cabin. A flight attendant quickly walked along the planes' aisles to find the source of the smoke and was signaled by a passenger to check on Reid.
Upon detecting the explosives in his shoes, some passengers restrained him, and a doctor on board administered tranquilizers to him. The flight was rerouted to land at Logan International Airport.
Reid was immediately arrested and charged after the plane landed. He pleaded guilty to eight counts of federal terrorism and was sentenced to 110 years imprisonment without parole plus three life sentences. He was then transferred to Colorado's maximum-security prison, "ADX Florence."
