About Richard Rogers
After his university education, Richard Rogers was hired by New York’s Skidmore, Owings & Merrill before he teamed up with other architects to form the company known as Team 4. Known to be a believer of the functionalism and modernism movements, the Italian-British architect worked on many iconic structures such as Strasbourg’s European Court of Human Rights, the Millennium Dome which is located in London, and the Pompidou Centre, Paris.
As an author
Rogers went ahead to publish many books which were mainly on architecture. Some of his most popular literature were titled “Architecture: A Modern View” and “Richard Rogers and Architects: From the House to the City”.
He spent his early years in Italy with his father William Nino Rogers. He married his business partner Su Brumwell in 1960 and together they raised three children namely Ben, Ab, and Zad. After their divorce, he tied the knot with Ruth Rogers and they were blessed with two kids including British-American entrepreneur, Roo Rogers.
He attended St John's School, Leatherhead before applying to do a course at the University for the Creative Arts (then known as Epsom School of Art). He later studied at Architectural Association School of Architecture and continued at Yale School of Architecture.
Throughout his career, he was decorated with many laurels which include the Pritzker Prize, RIBA Gold Medal, RIBA Gold Medal, and the Thomas Jefferson Medal. He was also given the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2008.
GQ magazine named him in their “50 best dressed British men” compilation in 2015.
Between 2001 and 2008, he worked as the lead advisor on urbanism and architecture to Ken Livingstone who was then the Mayor of London.
