About Richie Ashburn
The 5-foot-10 center fielder, known as "Putt-Putt," "The Tilden Flash," and "Whitey", was one of Major League Baseball's most productive lead-off hitters. Richie Ashburn hit over.300 nine times, placed second twice, and won the National League batting title on two separate occasions.
Early Years
The Tilden, Nebraska-born joined the Tilden Midget Baseball League at age 8 and started playing baseball. He also played in the Tilden High School basketball and baseball teams.
Career
He spent one season with the Blue Sox before enlisting in the army for World War II. He joined the 1948 Phillies squad as a rookie at age 21 and concluded the 1949 campaign with a.284 average. After the 1959 season, he was dealt to the Chicago Cubs.
He was acquired by the New York Mets following two seasons with the Chicago Cubs. He retired after hitting.306 and serving as the lone All-Star for a club that suffered a record-breaking 120 losses.
Following his retirement, he spent 35 years as a member of the Phillies' television-radio broadcasting crew.

Herberta Cox was his wife.
Death
He died in 1997. Autopsy report revealed that the former sportsman died of a heart attack.
Awards
He received his Hall of Fame induction in 1995. Two years later, he was inducted into The Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame.
In 2004, he was posthumously inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.
His jersey number 1 was retired by the Phillies in 1979.
Richie Ashburn was part of the All-Star MLB a whopping six times.
While playing for the Phillies, he was twice crowned NL batting champion – in 1955 and 1958.
