About Riddick Bowe
He fully goes by the name Riddick Lamont Bowe. He was an American professional boxer who was a two-time world heavyweight champion. He first won the WBA, WBC and IBF titles in 1992, making him an undisputed heavyweight champion.
Early life & background
He grew up in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn where he was born. He was the twelfth child of his mother’s thirteen children. Her name is Dorothy Bowe.
Amateur boxing career
In 1984, when he was 17, he defeated James Smith via knockout – the fight lasted for only 4 seconds.
In 1985 he lost to Ft. Worth Lt. Hvy. wt. Donald Stephens in that year’s National Golden Gloves championship. In 1988, he won a silver medal at the Olympics tournament in Seoul.
Professional Career
He became a professional in 1989 and knocked out newcomer Lionel Butler. He fought 13 times in 1989 beating Gary Lane twice. In 1990 he fought former champ Pinklon Thomas who pulled out of the fight after 8 rounds. He knocked out Bert Cooper in two rounds the next month which made him more famous.
He had fought 8 times by the end of 1990. He knocked out Bruce Seldon in round one in 1991 and in 1992; he fought Pierre Coetzer in an eliminator knocking him out in 7 rounds.
Personal Life
Riddick married Judy in 1988 and the couple had five children. He was prosecuted for allegedly kidnapping his wife and children. The couple split up in 1999. He later remarried Terri Blankey in 2000 but he was charged with domestic violence in 2001.
Trivia
He was enlisted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2015.
