Four-time National League All-Star baseball player, Rip Sewell is recognized for inventing the blooper pitch called the “Eephus pitch” in his thirteen-year career.
Education
The Alabama native attended Vanderbilt University on a football scholarship. However, he stopped playing after his first year.
Baseball Career
He joined the baseball team the Nashville Vols and was later sold to the Detroit Tigers, but he was soon relegated to the minor leagues. He got his chance to play in the major league and later joined the Pittsburgh Pirates. During his time with the Pirates, he threw his most famous blooper pitch in 1946. He retired from the sport in 1949.
Achievements
In 1973 and 1976, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports and Alabama Sports Halls of Fame respectively.
