About Rob Ford
Born Robert Bruce Ford, but popularly called Rob Ford, he was a famous Canadian politician and business executive.
Ford is an alumnus of the Scarlett Heights Collegiate Institute. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Carleton University, Ottawa.
He served as the city councilor of Ward 2 Etobicoke North from 2000 to October 2010, thus for three terms. During his tenure as councilor, he had a reputation for probing all the councilors’ budgets and spending. He was also known for making controversial and passionate arguments on finances at council meetings. For example, in 2001, he was part of the only four councilors who voted against the 5% property tax increase imposed on Canadian citizens.
In 2010, he became Toronto’s 64th Mayor. His tenure in office lasted from 2010 to 2014.
He was a victim of alcohol and drug addiction for several years. Ford was involved in many substance abuse scandals that led to the city council stripping him off much of his mayoral powers in 2013.
His wife accused him on two occasions of domestic abuse and disturbances.
In 2014, he was diagnosed with the development of an abdominal tumor. After several chemotherapy procedures and battling cancer for two years, he died on March 22, 2016.
