Robbie Fruean is a New Zealand former rugby [union] player known for his time with the Wellington Lions, the Crusaders, and Canterbury in ITM Cup.
Background
The New Zealand-born rugby winger is of Samoan descent. Fruean made his professional debut when he played with New Zealand in the Under-19 Rugby World Championship in 2007. That year, he won the IRB Under-19 Player of the Year.
Sports Career
He made his entrance into the National Provincial Championship (NPC) as a player for Wellington rugby football union. He took a break from the game to undergo surgery for rheumatic heart disease, a condition that is known to cause fatal inflammation of the heart.
The rugby outside centre made his return to the pitch in 2009, playing with the Hurricanes. Thereafter, he joined the Crusaders and played with them for two full seasons.
He debuted in the ITM Cup in 2010. The 2010 ITM Cup ended with Robbie being one of the Cup’s two top try scorers. In his third year playing in the ITM Cup, all the while playing with Canterbury, he was crowned ITM Cup player of the year at the New Zealand Rugby Awards.
The rugby union footballer also played for the Hawkes Bay Magpies in the ITM Cup, Bath in the Aviva Premiership, and Edinburgh Rugby in the Scottish Pro14.
Trivia
Robbie Fruean battled with rheumatic heart disease and went under the knife multiple times. Lesser men would have retired from the game much earlier, but Robbie forged on, even against medical advice.
