About Robert Bunsen
The German-born chemist was a renowned scientist and famous for developing several techniques to identify and measure various chemical substances. He died in 1899.
Early Life and Education
Bunsen was the youngest son of Cristian Bunsen, who was a chief librarian. He loved science as a child. He graduated from the University of Göttingen in Germany in 1828 and continued studying science with renowned German scientists Friedrich Stromeyer and Carl Friedrich Gauss. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1831.
Career and Accomplishments
1833 saw Bunsen become a lecturer at the University of Göttingen, where he started his experiments on the insolubility of arsenous acid and metals. His research on the use of iron oxide hydrate is now the most effective cure for arsenic poisoning.
Robert Bunsen was then made professor in 1841 and headed to Iceland to explore volcanic properties. Bunsen created the Bunsen cell battery, which was much cheaper and more efficient. After a successful career, Bunsen was elected to be a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1862.
Retirement and Death
Bunsen retired from active service in 1889 and died in 1899, aged 88.
