About Robert Byrd
Robert Byrd was a remarkable American politician and lawyer who served as the Senator of the state of Virginia for almost five decades. He was a member of the Democratic Party from 1959 until his death in 2010.
He has also held a number of official positions including the Senate Minority Leader, and Chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus. Until his death, he was the longest-serving United States Senator in history. He was also the longest-serving member of the United States Congress.
Byrd made a name for himself as the first West Virginian to serve in both houses of the state legislature and Congress.

Achievements
During the 1940s, he worked as a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan.
He was known for his stance against Clinton's 1993 push to allow gays to serve in the military.
