Robert E. Lee was an American military officer known for being the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War. Starting from 1862 he led the Southern forces to a series of victories over the more superior Union Army until 1865 when he was forced to surrender his entire army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox, Virginia.
He was the son of Anne Hill Carter and Major General Henry Lee III. He married Mary Anna Randolph Custis. The couple had three sons and four daughters.
After the civil war, he could have received the death sentence as a traitor to the United States, but he was pardoned by President Lincoln.
