Robert Gallo made a name for himself through his research on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Career
The American biomedical researcher is recognized as a co-discoverer of HIV as the cause of AIDS alongside French virologist Luc Montagnier. He co-founded the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Institute of Human Virology in 1996 and has served as its director. He is also a co-founder of the Global Virus Network (GVN) and Profectus BioSciences.
Family Life
He has Italian ancestry. In 1961, he married a woman named Mary Jane Hayes.
Achievements
He is the only two-time recipient of the Lasker Award. Other honors he has received are the Charles S. Mott Prize, Dickson Prize, Japan Prize and Dan David Prize.
Trivia
In 2008, he was denied a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine although Montagnier and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi were given the award for their research on HIV.
