About Robert Gates
Following his impressive work with the U.S. Air Force, Robert Gates was appointed as the Deputy Director of Central Intelligence in 1986. Three years later, President George H. W. Bush chose him as the Deputy National Security Advisor.
Earlier that year, he was named as the President for National Security Affairs’ Deputy Assistant. Under the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush served as the Director of Central Intelligence.
In 2006, he was appointed as United States’ Secretary of Defense, and served in that position for five years. He became the Chancellor of the College of William & Mary in 2012.
Family
He spent his childhood with his parents Melville A. "Mel" Gates and Isabel V. Goss. His 1967 marriage to Becky Wilkie has produced two kids.
Education
In 1961, he completed his education at Wichita High School East and continued at College of William and Mary. He has also studied at Georgetown University.
Decorations
He has been honored with many laurels including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Presidential Citizens Medal, and the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal.
Trivia
He published his autobiography titled “From the Shadows: The Ultimate Insider's Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War” in 1996.
Gates has also worked with the Boy Scouts of America as its president.
