About Robert Hooks
Multiple award-winning actor Robert Hooks is the founder of the D.C. Black Repertory Company. He established his name in the film industry in 1967 when he collaborated with actors like Gerald S. Krone and Douglas Turner Ward to create the theatre company called The Negro Ensemble Company.
Hooks earned his first Broadway gig in 1960 when he replaced Louis Gossett, Jr. in the play “A Raisin in the Sun”. According to records, the veteran actor made his onscreen debut in 1967. He starred as Dwight Henderson, an FBI agent, in the 1992 film “Passenger 57” which also starred Wesley Snipes and Bruce Payne. He was also a regular face on the television show “Murder, She Wrote”.
Other works
The actor has also been commended for his numerous civil rights campaigns. Through this, he has partnered with organizations like the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Chelsea Civil Rights Committee. In order to support disadvantaged teens who are aspiring to become actors, Hooks established The Group Theatre Workshop.
Family
He was born to Edward Hooks and his wife Mae Bertha Ward. His four siblings are Bernice, James Walter, Caroleigh, and Charles Edward. He has been married to Lorrie Marlow. His children include actor Kevin Hooks, and Robert Hooks, Jr.
Education
After Stevens Elementary School, he moved to West Philadelphia High School. He continued his education at Temple University.
Awards
His numerous accolades include the Theatre World Award, the National Black Theatre Festival’s Living Legend Award, and the Trailblazer Award.
