About Robert J. Wood
Robert Jefferson Wood played a huge part in the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He also contributed to the creation of the organization’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in 1951.
Five years later, this American military officer was named as the United States Army Antiaircraft Artillery and Guided Missile Center’s deputy commanding general. He went on to serve in other senior positions in the US Army before he was named as the commander General of the Army Air Defense Command in 1960. A couple of years later, Wood was appointed as NATO’s director of military assistance, and served until 1965.

Before joining the United States Military Academy, he enrolled at Randolph-Macon College.
