About Robert Owen
Robert Owen was a Welsh businessman credited for promoting utopian socialism. He’s also celebrated for championing the cooperative ideology. He was one of Britain’s wealthiest people during the 1800s. He accumulated his riches from managing a textile manufacturing company located in the New Lanark village in Scotland.
He later moved to the United States to experiment a socialist community at New Harmony in Indiana. After the initiative failed, he moved back to the United Kingdom to support many social intervention initiatives such as child labor laws, and trade union programs. He also fought for the establishment of free co-educational institutions.
Family
He’s the son of Robert and Anne Owen. His siblings were named Richard, William, John and Anne. He was married to Ann Caroline Dale, and together they had eight children including Richard Dale, Robert Dale, and David Dale.
Trivia
He briefly served as the leader of the Grand National Consolidated Trade Union.
In 1857, he published a memoir titled “The Life of Robert Owen”.
He abandoned his education at the age of 10 years to work as an apprentice.
He began his own business with a £100 loan he collected from one of his brothers.
