About Robert Peel
Robert Peel began his political campaign in 1809, the same year he started his training as a lawyer. His first political position was as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cashel. He later represented the people of Chippenham in parliament in 1812. Five years later, the people of Oxford University elected him to represent them in parliament.
A renowned member of the Conservative Party, Peel would best be remembered for his two terms as UK’s Prime Minister. His first tenure was from 1834 to 1835. Within that same period, he served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1841, he was named to the Prime Minister position again and served for five years.
He was also celebrated for creating the Metropolitan Police Service, which is largely seen as the backbone of modern-day policing in the United Kingdom.
Personal Life
His dad, Sir Robert Peel, 1st Baronet, was a popular British industrialist and politician. He is the son of Ellen Yates.
He married Julia Floyd in 1820 and together they had seven children including Sir Robert Peel, 3rd Baronet; Sir Frederick Peel; and Arthur Wellesley Peel, 1st Viscount Peel.
Education
He had his early education at Harrow School and continued at Christ Church, Oxford. He later attended Lincoln's Inn for his training as a lawyer.
Fun Facts
He also served in the military and was named the captain of the Regiment in Manchester in 1808.
A statue of him has been erected at a number of public places including London’s Parliament Square, and Sandy Bay in Tasmania, Australia.
At the beginning of his political career, he was sponsored by Sir Arthur Wellesley.
