About Robert R. Gilruth
After learning about NACA's Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Virginia, young Robert Rowe Gilruth was encouraged to pursue a career in aeronautics, and that desire led to the US space program hiring him as the first director of NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC).
Education
He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering in 1935 and a Master of Science in 1936.
Career
He was employed by NACA's Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in 1937, where he conducted flight research. He took the task of getting a man into space before the Soviet Union very serious. The scientist was appointed head of the Space Task Group when NASA was established. He was instrumental in the development of the Gemini program, which he supported as a way for NASA to get experience operating in space before trying a lunar landing.
Gilruth was appointed director of the NASA center that oversaw the Apollo program shortly after it began.
Honors
Gilruth shared the Collier Trophy in 1971 with the Apollo 15 crew.
The American aviator was elected to the International Air & Space Hall of Fame in 1992.
