About Robert Sternberg
Robert Sternberg is one of America’s greatest psychometricians and psychologists in history. He is a psychology and human development professor with over a dozen honorary doctorates. He has made immense contributions to the field of psychology, most notable his groundbreaking work on “the triarchic theory of intelligence.”
Early life & Education
Sternberg is of Jewish descent and was born in New Jersey, USA. During his childhood, he suffered from “test anxiety.” He explained that he performed better when he wrote exams in a comfortable environment with younger students. This problem with tests is what sparked his interest in psychology.
The psychologist is an alumnus of Yale University, where he graduated with distinction in psychology. In 1975, Sternberg earned his Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University.
Contributions to Psychology
He is the creator of “the triarchic theory of intelligence” in psychology. The concept challenges the concept of intelligence to be just “school smart” and proposes that intelligence should be examined more extensively and not just through “intelligence tests.”
He has proposed several theories relating to love, leadership, wisdom, and other influential psychological concepts. The 2002 “Review of General Psychology” survey showed that he was among the 60 most cited psychologists of the 20th century.
