About Roderick Chisholm
He was regarded by many as one of the most innovative, successful, and significant American philosophers of the 20th century. Born Roderick Milton Chisholm, this philosopher's research areas covered works in epistemology, metaphysics, free will, and the philosophy of perception.
Personal Life
After earning his degree at Brown University in 1938, he proceeded to complete his Ph.D. at Harvard University in the early 1940s. In July 1942, he joined the army.
He and Eleanor Parker got married in 1943.
Career
He was a very accomplished philosophy instructor who oversaw 59 doctoral dissertations. "Perceiving: A Philosophical Study" (1957) was his first significant piece. The book "Theory of Knowledge," which was published in three significantly different editions (1966, 1977, and 1989), encapsulated his epistemological beliefs.
From 1980 to 1986, he served as editor of Philosophy and Phenomenological Research.
