He was a multiple Academy Award winner and a prominent score composer. He was also an influential personality on the Hollywood landscape, having worked very hard at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) production firm.
Personal life and Death
Roger Edens was born to parents of Scots-Irish descent. After break-up with Martha LaPelle, he ended in a number of gay relationships until settling with screenwriter Leonard Gershe. He battled cancer and passed on in July 1970.
Career
Roger was initially a pianist for ballroom dancers until conducting music at Broadway. From 1932, he wrote and arranged scores for Paramount Films and thereafter moved to MGM in 1935 as score composer and supervisor - there he wrote materials for Judy Garland’s hit songs like “Our Love Affair” and “It’s a Great Day for the Irish”.
MGM’s producer Arthur Freed appointed Roger Edens as associate producer in praise of his work, and together, produced top ranking musicals as “Singin’ in the Rain” and “Easter Parade”.
When musical films became less popular in the 1950’s, he returned to Paramount to produce the 1957 film “Funny Face” with Fred Astaire and others.
Awards
Among his Academy Awards include “Best Score” honors for “Easter Parade”-1958 and “Annie Get Your Gun”-1950.
