It was after meeting actor James Cagney that Roger Smith decided to consider a Hollywood career upon the latter’s suggestion. In 1956 at the age of 24, he played his first-ever screen role as Richard in an episode of the television series, “Damon Runyon Theater”.
His best-known roles include Jeff Spencer in the private detective drama series, “77 Sunset Strip” and Lieutenant Douglas Roberts in the sitcom, “Mister Roberts”.
Family Life
He was raised in South Gate, California until age 12 when his family relocated to Nogales, Arizona. His parents’ names were Dallas L. Smith and Leone Irene Adams. Australian actress Victoria Shaw was his wife from 1956 to 1965 and the mother of his three children. He and actress Ann-Margret were married from 1967 until his death. He served as her manager for a while.
