About Roger Williamson
English driver Roger Williamson shot to fame in 1971 when he won his first British Formula 3 championship. He repeated this success the following year before joining Formula One in 1973. He made his F1 debut as a member of the March Engineering team.
His promising career was cut short later that year after he was involved in a fatal accident during one of his races.
Death
Williamson’s car turned upside down after one of his tyres developed a fault. His vehicle later caught fire and he died from asphyxiation before his body was removed.
Trivia
For his attempt to rescue Williamson, David Purley received the George Medal.
His last race was in the Dutch Grand Prix in 1973.
