About Roméo Dallaire
Before starting his political career, Roméo Dallaire was a member of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery of the Canadian Army. In 1993, a year before the infamous Rwandan genocide, Dallaire was selected into the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda to serve as the major-general.
Two years later, he was made the commander of the Land Force Quebec Area. In 2004, he worked with the Government of Canada as an advisor before he was selected into the Canadian Senate the following year.
That aside, he has worked with other renowned institutions like the Will to Intervene Project and the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies. The Canadian is also the founder of The Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative, whose aim is to stop the use of child soldiers.
Family
He was born to Catherine Vermaessen and her military officer husband, Roméo Louis Dallaire. He divorced Elizabeth Roberge in 2019 and married Marie-Claude Michaud the following year. His three children are Willem, Guy and Catherine.
Education
He was trained at the Royal Military College of Canada. Dallaire also attended the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College.
Honors
His numerous accolades include the Companion of the Order of Military Merit and the Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec.
