About Ron Santo
American third baseman Ron Santo had one of the most successful baseball careers in the history of the sport. In his 15-year career, he played for the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox.
Career
Santo made his professional debut with the Cubs in 1960. During his time with the team, he set the record for the most assists at third base until it was broken in 1974. He joined the White Sox in 1974, playing for a single season before announcing his retirement. Santo became a broadcaster for the Cubs game on radio.
Personal Life & Health
He battled diabetes since his teenage years and eventually had to have his lower legs amputated. He was active in raising funds and awareness for the diseases, raising over $65 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He passed away in 2010 from complications from diabetes and bladder cancer.
Awards
Santo was a 9-time All-Star champion and also won the Gold Glove Award 5 times. In 2012, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
