Ronny Turiaf is a famous retired French basketball star. The player starred in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for ten seasons and represented the French national team in major tournaments from 2003 to 2012.
Background & Early Life
Fort-de-France was his birthplace, and he was raised in Martinique. Following his father’s advice, he moved to Paris at age 15 for his education.
He was part of the French Under-18 national team, which won gold at the 2000 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship.
College Career
He is an alumnus of Gonzaga University, where he played college basketball for four years. He was honored as the conference’s best player of the year in his final year. The sportsman graduated with a triple major degree in French, communication, and sports management.
Professional Career
The Los Angeles Lakers selected him as their 37th overall pick during the 2005 NBA draft. In July 2008, he accepted a four-year contract of $17 million and joined the Golden State warriors. The player was then traded to the New York Knicks in July 2010.
During the 2011 NBA lockout, he joined French side ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne. In late 2011, he returned to the NBA and played for Washington Wizards, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, and Minnesota Timberwolves from 2011 until his retirement in 2016.
