About Rosalía de Castro
The Spanish poet María Rosalía Rita de Castro was known for her unconventional method of writing her early poems in the Galician language. Her reputation earned her a place on the 500 peseta bills in 1987.
Growing Up
She grew up in a humble home and lived in a relatively poor province in Galicia. Her background encouraged her to put her thoughts on paper; over time, Castro unearthed her poetic talent.
Career
The poet released her first major prose, which was titled "La Hija del mar," in 1859. The recognition she recieved urged her to produce other popular write-ups under that genre. Her publications such as, "Flavio" in 1861, "Ruinas" in 1866, "El caballero de las botas azules" in 1867 and "El domingo de Ramos" in 1881 all allowed her to carve a reputation for herself in the literary community.
Rosalia de Castro also wrote some poems, including "La Flor" in 1857 and "En las orillas del Sar" in 1884. Her famous Galician poems, "Cantares Gallegos" in 1863 and "Follas novas" in 1880, set the foundation for her worldwide fame.
Personal Life
The popular poet was married to Manuel Murguía from 1858 to 1885. She, unfortunately, died in 1885 and was survived by 7 children.
