Rosetta LeNoire was an American actress, producer and casting agent. She was born on August 8, 1911 in New York and died on March 17, 2002 at age 90.
Early Life and Career
Rosetta played her early acting roles as “Little Maid from School” Peep-Bo in the 1939 “The Hot Mikado”.
She featured on stage, singing and dancing in “I had a ball”, “Destry Rides”, “Bassa Moona” “Janie”, “Decisions” and “Marching with Jimmy”.
In the 1972 animation, “Fritz the Cat”, she played the voice of Big Bertha. Directed by Ralph Bakshi, the animated black comedy was based on Robert Dennis Crumb’s comic strip titled “Fritz the Cat”.
Rosetta appeared in many other films and television series between 1958 and 1998.
She appeared in films such as “The Sunshine Boys”, “Lily in Love”, “Moscow on the Hudson”, and Brewster’s Millions”. In the latter, which was directed by Walter Hill, she was cast as Judge R. Woods.
She appeared in 8 episodes of the NBC sitcom “Amen” as Leola Forbes/Leola Hudson. She also made a number of appearances in the hit TV sitcom “Family Matters”. In the 1980s sitcom “Gimme a Break!”, she was cast in 16 episodes as Maybelle ‘Mama’ Harper.
Other television shows that she appeared in include: “Ryan’s Hope”, “Fantasy Island”, and “Great Permances”.
Awards, Accomplishments, and Legacy
Rosetta was an ardent proponent of racial equity. She established the AMAS Repertory Theatre Company in 1968 to encourage interracial and multi-ethnic productions in New York.
The Actors’ Equity Association awarded her for enhancing diversification in casting. The award was renamed the Rosetta LeNoire Award in 1988, meant to award persons who show exquisite dedication and profound achievement in theatrical arts. It was also aimed at advocating equal opportunity and diversity.
Rosette LeNoire also won the National Medal of Arts in 1999.
