He was a German Marxist and political activist who was a frontman in the West German Socialist Students Union of the 1960s.
Early Life
Born in Dutschke, Germany, he earned a high school diploma and later enrolled at the Free University of Berlin.
Political Activism
In 1965, he was elected to the political council of the West Berlin SDS. The organisation rejected traditionalism and believed that violence, and not peaceful protests, was what would effect change from the ruling regime. When Iran’s dictator visited Berlin in 1967, the organisation marched against him.
Assassination Attempt & Death
In April 1968, while leaving his home in Paris, he was shot 3 times. He eventually succumbed to severe brain damage on December 24, 1979, aged 39. His assassin Joseph Bachmann was sentenced to 7 years in prison.
Personal Life
He married German author Gretchen Klotz in 1966. They had 2 children.
