In his prime, Rudolf Friml was a preferred pianist and a significant operetta composer who contributed to the survival of the cherished romantic operetta form.
His Life
He enrolled in the Prague Conservatory in 1895, where he studied composition and the piano with Antonn Dvoák. For performing without authorization, he was dismissed from the conservatory in 1901.
He was married three times, with all three ending in divorce.
Music
In both Europe and the US, where he stayed after 1906, he played the piano for violinist Jan Kubelk. In 1912, he penned the popular tune “The Firefly”, which was his big break as an operetta composer. He composed Rose-Marie in 1924. He is well known for the songs "Indian Call Love" and "The Three Musketeers. He began writing music for movies in 1934. A 1937 movie adaptation of "The Firefly" included his final significant piece, "The Donkey Serenade."
