About Rudolf Höss
Rudolf Franz Ferdinand Höss was a German army officer who served in Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany’s paramilitary organization, Schutzstaffel (SS). He is credited for innovating faster ways of fulfilling Hitler’s plan for the genocide of Jews during World War II, popularly referred to as the Final Solution. He also presided over the Auschwitz concentration camp as its commandant from May 1940 to November 1943. He was tried and later executed for war crimes following Nazi Germany’s defeat.
Family Life
He was the only son and eldest of the three children of Franz Xaver Höss and Lina Speck. In 1929, he married a woman named Hedwig Hensel. He was a father of five. He also had an affair with Eleonore Hodys, a political prisoner who was being held at Auschwitz.
Death
On 2 April 1947, he was sentenced to death by hanging. He was executed on 16 April 1947 near the Auschwitz concentration camp.
