About Rudolf Kompfner
Although he was a trained architect, Rudolf Kompfner was more interested in physics. This interest led him to invent the travelling-wave tube, a tool used to strengthen radio signals.
Biography
Kompfner was born in Vienna, Austria and attended Technische Hochschule to study architecture. After graduating, he moved to London, England to work as an architect. After being imprisoned during World War II, he decided to study physics. He received his D.Phil in physics in 1951 and worked for Bell Laboratories. Kompfner also wrote several scientific publications and had over 50 patents.
Achievements
He won the Duddell Medal of the Physical Society of England in 1955, as well as the David Sarnoff Award of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1960. In 1975, Kompfner won the National Medal of Science and received the IEEE Medal of Honor. He received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University in 1969.
Family
