About Ruth Handler
Ruth Handler will forever be remembered for her contributions to revolutionizing the toy manufacturing industry. The businesswoman and inventor is best recognized for her creation of the Barbie doll in 1959. The company responsible for the production of the famous toy, Mattel Inc., was initially started by her husband, Elliot Handler as a plastic furniture company in 1945 until it diversified into making toys. Ruth later became the President of Mattel and was in office until 1974, when she was forced to resign due to fraudulent financial reports.
Family Life
Her parents Jacob Mosko and Ida Rubenstein were Polish-Jewish immigrants. She was married to Elliot Handler from 1938 until her death over 60 years later. They had two children; Barbara and Ken whom the Barbie and Ken dolls were named after.
Death
She died on April 27, 2002 from colon cancer surgery complications.
