About Saigō Takamori
Saigō Takamori was a 19th-century Japanese leader, samurai, and nobleman. He was among the most influential Japanese samurai in history. Additionally, he was among the “Three Great Restoration Nobles” who led and played essential roles in the famous “Meiji Restoration” event, which brought Japan under the practical imperial rule of “Emperor Meiji” in 1868.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Kagoshima, Satsuma Domain. He was the first son of samurai squire Saigō Kichibē. Takamori was a brilliant poet early in his life, and he wrote under the name “Saigō Nanshū.”
Major Battles & Ideologies
His relentless attitude in the 1860s was one of the leading causes of the “Boshin War.” During the war, he was the leader of the Imperial forces when they fought in the “Battle of Toba-Fushimi.” He led the troops to Edo Castle and took over when Katsu Kaishu surrendered.
He was one of the vocal opponents who demanded and had Tokugawa Yoshinobu resign, returning Japanese power to the Emperor in what is widely known as the “Meiji Restoration.”
However, he was opposed to Japan’s modernization during the rule of Emperor Meiji and emphasized that revenue should be spent on the country’s military modernization.
Death
He died aged 49 on September 24, 1877, after sustaining a mortal wound in the hip injury during “the battle of Shiroyama.”
