About Salmon P. Chase
Salmon Portland Chase was one of the limited number of politicians in the United States who got the chance to serve in the three arms of the federal government. He was the United States Senator from Ohio from 1849 to 1855 and subsequently served as the 23rd Governor of Ohio from 1856 to 1860. He returned to the senatorial seat on March 4, 1861 but resigned after two days to assume office of the Secretary of the Treasury on March 7, 1861. In December 1864, he became the 6th Chief Justice of the United States.
Family Life
He was one of the ten children of Ithamar Chase and Janette Ralston. He married three times and had two children, one of whom was the famous society hostess, Kate Chase.
Honors
He was made a 3rd class companion of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States in 1865.
Death
He died on May 7, 1873 in New York City from a stroke.
