About Salvador Luria
He was an Italian microbiologist and physician and a Nobel Prize laureate. His work with Max Delbrück on bacteriophage proved that phage-resistant bacteria came as a result of gene mutations.
Early Life & Education
Originally from Turin, Italy, Salvador Luria worked as a radiologist after graduating from the University of Turin in 1935.
Scientific Accomplishments
In 1943, he teamed up with German biophysicist Delbrück and published a paper that argued that viruses go through permanent changes in their hereditary material. Later that year, the pair created a fluctuation test which proved that phage-resistant bacteria were caused by spontaneous mutations and not by environmental changes.
Additional Facts
In 1964, he served as the Sedgwick professor of biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ten years later, he was appointed director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Marriage
He married psychology professor Zela Hurwitz in 1945. They had one child.
Award
He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1969.
