About Sam Perkins
Sam Perkins excelled in his basketball career right from high school, through college, on the US men’s national team and as a professional in the NBA. He co-captained the US national team to a gold medal victory at the 1984 Olympics and then made his NBA debut in the same year with the Dallas Mavericks. In 1990, he moved to the Los Angeles Lakers, for which he played until 1993. He also played for the Seattle Supersonics from 1993 to 1998 and the Indiana Pacers from 1998 to 2001, when he retired.
Personal Life
He was brought up in Brooklyn, New York as a Jehovah’s Witness. Because of his religion, he never stood for the national anthem before games. He has been married to Dionne Perkins since 1986 and has three children.
Achievements
He was named the USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year in 1984. He was also an NBA All-Rookie First Team member. He is an inductee of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
Trivia
He served as the Indiana Pacers’ Vice President of Player Relations from 2008 to 2010.
