About Santiago Ramón y Cajal
Santiago Ramón y Cajal was one of the most renowned and brilliant Spanish neuroscientists and histologists. He was the first Spanish to win a Nobel Prize in the scientific field, winning the "Nobel Prize in Medicine" in 1906 with colleague Camillo Golgi. His ground-breaking research of the brain's microscopic structure made him a modern-neuroscience pioneer.
Background, Education & Career
The neuroscientist was born in Petilla de Aragón, Spain. Despite his artistic abilities, he decided to pursue medicine at the University of Zaragoza. He then served as an Army medic in the 1870s. In 1877, he received his medical Ph.D. in Madrid, and in 1883, he became an anatomy professor at the University of Valencia. He also served as director of the famous "Zaragoza Museum" and held professorships at institutions in Barcelona and Madrid.
Major Works & Nobel Prize
After discovering that nerve cells can be colored with silver nitrate in 1887, Camillo Golgi utilized the technology to make several breakthrough discoveries about the neurological system. He and Camillo Golgi shared the 1906 "Nobel Prize in Medicine," identifying the neuron as the fundamental unit of neural anatomy.
He also made several of the earliest drawings illustrating brain cell "arborizations."
Death
He died aged 82 on 17 October 1934, in Madrid, Spain.
