About Saparmurat Niyazov
Saparmurat Niyazov was a Turkmen politician who served as the ruler of Turkmenistan from 1985 until he died (in 2006). Prior to the independence of Turkmenistan from the Soviet in 1991, he was recognized as the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Turkmenistan and in November 1990, he became the 1st President of Turkmenistan.
During his rule, he gained notoriety for being a despot, dictator and totalitarian. He was also accused of massive corruption of the resources of a state that had Central Asia’s lowest life expectancy.
Family Life
He was the son of schoolteacher and financial officer Atamyrat Niyazov, who was killed during World War II, and Gurbanaoltan Eje. He was married to Muza Niyazova, with whom he had two children. His son Myrat Niyazova also became a politician.
Death
He died on December 21, 2006 from a sudden heart attack at 66 years old.
