She was a famous actress. She was one of the popular faces in the French movie industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite being a female, she was sometimes used for male roles as well, including Shakespeare's Hamlet. Due to her versatility, she was nicknamed "the queen of the pose and the princess of the gesture" and was also referred to as the one with the "golden voice".
She is credited for being one of the first ever actresses to feature in motion pictures and also make sound recordings. Her works have influenced many new-age actresses, including Virginia Fábregas. Some of her works were titled "Le Duel d'Hamlet" (1900), "La Dame aux Camélias" (1911) and "La Voyante" (1923).

Her mother was Julie Bernardt, while her father was called Édouard Bernhardt. Sarah was married to Greek actor, Jacques Damala from 1882 to 1889.
She was romantically linked with Charles-Joseph Lamoral de Ligne, to whom she had Maurice Bernhardt who worked as a theater manager.
