About Sarah Hughes
Sarah Elizabeth Hughes is her full name, and she is a former American figure skater. She notably won gold at the 2002 Olympics in the all-figure skating ladies event and has contributed to many philanthropic and societal benefiting projects after her retirement.
Background & Education
Born in Great Neck, New York, she attended Great Neck North High School and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Yale University in 2009. Hughes is also a 2018 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Career Highlights
She won bronze and silver medals across the “World Junior Championships,” “Grand Prix Final,” and “World Championships.” Hughes won gold in the ladies’ singles event at the 2002 Winter Olympics in what was considered one of the greatest moments of figure skating. Thus, since she was the youngest competitor, no one anticipated that she would significantly contend with the favorites. However, she made Olympic history by landing a double triple jump-triple jump combo in a four-minute free skate. She was feted with a parade in Great Neck following her Olympic victory. Hillary Clinton spoke during the parade and proclaimed the day “Sarah Hughes Day.”
