Childhood
Jewett was born in Maine to Theodore and Caroline Jewett. She suffered from rheumatoid arthritis when she was a child and developed a passion for nature when she went on regular walks. She attended Berwick Academy and graduated in 1866.
Writing Career
When she was 19 years old, she published her first story “Jenny Garrow’s Lovers”, using her pen name, Alice Eliot during her early years. Her reputation grew as she published more books such as “The Country of the Pointed Firs”, “A Country Doctor”, and “A White Heron.”
Personal Life
Most of Jewett’s works were often focused on friendships between women and were often a reflection of her relationships with other women. She lived with Annie Adams Fields for the rest of her life after Annie’s husband passed away, with many people believing the two to be lovers. Jewett died in 1909 after suffering a stroke.
