About Sargent Shriver
Sargent Shriver was the founder of educational programs like Upward Bound, Job Corps and Head Start. He was associated with the Democratic Party and was nominated as vice president in the 1972 presidential election.
Family and Education.
His parents were Robert Sargent Shriver and Hilda. He is a descendent of David Shriver, who signed the Maryland Constitution and Bill of Rights at Maryland’s Constitutional Convention in 1776.
He was on a scholarship program at Canterbury School in Connecticut. He was an alumnus of Yale Law School.
He tied the knot with Eunice Kennedy in 1953, and the couple went on to have five children, including Timothy Perry Shriver and Maria Owings Shriver. His wife, who was renowned philanthropist, was a member of the Kennedy Family. Eunice Kennedy, who was the younger sister of JFK, was famed for founding the Special Olympics.
Political Career
He became the president of the Chicago Board of Education where he acted as the president of the board for five years. He was the youngest member to be part of the board. He worked as a political and organization coordinator in the Wisconsin and West Virginia primaries.
During the presidencies of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, Shriver served as the director of the Peace Corps, the first person to hold that position.
From 1968 to 1970, he served as the U.S. ambassador to France. Two years later, he stood as the running mate of Democratic Party flag bearer George McGovern in the 1972 presidential election.
Prior to his appointment as the U.S. top diplomat to France, he served as the director of the Office of Economic Opportunity from 1964 to 1968.
Legacy
The Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center was named after him and his wife.
A film titled “The Story of Sargent Shriver'' was documented about him.
President Clinton awarded him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The medal is the highest civilian honor in the United States.
In 1968, the University of Notre Dame bestowed upon him the Laetare Medal. He was praised for his contributions to not just the Catholic Church but the society in general.
In 1993, he was a recipient of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Freedom From Want Award.
Death
The American diplomat died in 2011, aged 95.
