About Saul Bellow
Multiple award-winning writer Saul Bellow is widely known for his numerous best-selling books such as “Herzog” and “The Adventures of Augie March”. The Canadian-American writer started his career as a lecturer after returning from his service in the U.S. Merchant Marine during the Second World War.
He published his first novel in 1944 which was entitled “Dangling Man”. By the end of 2001, he had published a total of 14 novels and four short story books.
Family
He was the product of the union between Abraham Bellows and Lescha Gordin. His three siblings were Moishe, Schmuel, and Zelda. He was in five different marriages. Until his death, he was the husband of Janis Freedman. He divorced his first wife Anita Goshkin in 1956.
He was also married to mathematician Alexandra Bagdasar Ionescu Tulcea from 1974 to 1985. He was the father of Greg, Adam, and Freedman.
Education
Bellow studied at University of Chicago, and Northwestern University before graduating from the University of Wisconsin.
Decorations
The writer was a recipient of many prizes such as the National Medal of Arts, Nobel Prize for Literature, Pulitzer Prize, and National Book Award for Fiction. He was the first person to win the latter on three occasions.
In 1990, the National Book Foundation honored him with the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
