About Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Screamin' Jay Hawkins was a singer, songwriter, film, and television actor of American nationality. By the age of 20, he was already good at playing the guitar. He was regarded as the foremost developer of shock rock music. In 1951, Hawkins joined his first music band named Tiny Grimes.
He rose to prominence after he released his hit single titled “I Put a Spell on You” in 1956. Other singles he released were “You're All of Life to Me”, “I Found My Way to Wine”, and “You Made Me Love You”.
As an actor, he made his film and television debut in 1957 appearing in both “Mister Rock and Roll”, and “Alan Freed's Rock 'N' Roll Revue”. Other films and series he was featured in include “American Hot Wax”, and “Gadzooks! It's All Happening”.
Family
He wedded six wives including Virginia Sabellona, his sixth wife who he married in 1961. It has been reported that he gave birth to many children including Suki Lee Anne Hawkins, Janice Paris, and Helen Perez.
Trivia
He was adopted when he was just 18 months old.
He was influenced by several singers and instrumentalists such as Roy Milton, Charles Brown, Mario Lanza, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Lionel Hampton.
Hawkins became a U. S Army officer in 1942 after he joined with a fake birth certificate.
As a boxer, he became a middleweight champion of Alaska in 1949.
He released his first album in 1958 titled “At Home with Screamin' Jay Hawkins”.
In 1989, Hawkins was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for the category of “Best Supporting Male Actor”.
