About Sebastião Salgado
Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado Júnior, famously called Sebastião Salgado, is a highly revered Brazilian photographer and photojournalist. Salgado is one of the most respected international social documentary photographers, having traveled to over 100 countries for his works. In addition, he is a “UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.”
Early Life & Education
He initially pursued economics as a career, earning master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Sao Paula and the University of Paris. He then worked for the “International Coffee Organization,” where he frequently traveled to Africa for World Bank missions. However, in the early 1970s, his desire to document his African experiences sparked his eventual career as a social documentary photographer.
Photography
He became a member of the famed “Magnum Photos” in 1979. Two years later, he rose to fame in the USA by capturing John Hinckley’s attempt to kill President Ronald Reagan in a riveting photograph.
In 1993, he earned a great international reputation when his exhibition “In Human Effort” was presented at the “Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art” as it was the museum’s first time displaying the works of an individual documentary photographer.
Major Works & Awards
His notable works include “Other Americas,” “Workers,” and “L’homme en détresse.” His honors include various ICP Infinity Awards, “the Eugene Smith Award for Humanitarian Photography,” “Arles International Festival’s prize,” and the “Premium Imperiale.”
