About Sejong the Great
A member of the House of Yi, Sejong the Great became the King of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty in 1418. Until 1422, his father ruled as the regent. He was credited for creating the Hangul alphabets and for improving the economic conditions of the kingdom.
Considered as one of the greatest leaders of the kingdom, Sejong helped to defeat the Japanese army during the historic Ōei Invasion. He also promoted Confucianism in the country.
Family
He was a product of the marriage between Queen Wongyeong and King Taejong, and had a brother called Grand Prince Yangnyeong. He was married to Queen Soheon and had two children named Sejo of Joseon, and Munjong of Joseon, who succeeded his father.
Death
He suffered from diabetes which later caused his death in 1450.
Trivia
It was under his tenure that the famous Hall of Worthies was established.
He inspired the 2008 film “The Great King, Sejong” in which his character was played by Kim Sang-kyung.
