About Serge Koussevitzky
The Russian composer during his days on earth was popular for his service as a music director for the Boston Symphony Orchestra for 25 years. Through his hard work, he was able to make the Orchestra one of the best in America.
Personal life
He was of a Jewish descent.
He was awarded a scholarship to study at the Musico-Dramatic Institute of the Moscow Philharmonic Society, where studied double bass and music theory.
The conductor was married multiple times, including to Olga Naumova, a woman who served as his secretary for close to two decades. Naumova was also the niece of his second wife Natalie.
Career Highlight
Koussevitzky started his career as a solo artist in 1901 but only came to the limelight around 1908. From 1901 to 1908, he performed double bass recitals and also taught himself how to be a conductor.
In 1909, he created his own orchestra and he together with his orchestra held performances in places especially in towns around the Volga River.
Koussevitzky’s work can be seen in the following records: “Third Symphony”, “Seventh Symphony”, “Appalachian Spring” and “Harold in Italy”.
Legacy
After his death, the Tanglewood Music Center established the Koussevitzky Prize to award brilliant and promising conductors.
