About Sergio Osmeña
Sergio Osmeña’s political journey began in 1906 after he was made the Governor of the Province of Cebu. The following year, he was elected into the Philippine Assembly and was made the speaker of the house. He became a Senator in 1922 before he was selected by Manuel L. Quezon as his running mate ahead of the presidential elections in 1935.
Quezon’s success in the election meant he would serve as the country’s vice President. Their mandates were renewed in 1941. Quezon passed away three years later and Osmeña became the President of the Philippines.
Family
He was raised by his parents Juana Osmeña y Suico and Don Pedro Lee Gotiaoco. His first spouse Estefania Veloso died in 1918. Two years later, he tied the knot with Esperanza Limjap. He had thirteen children from his two marriages including Sergio Veloso Osmeña Jr., who would also serve as a Senator.
His grandchildren Sergio Osmeña III, Emilio Mario Osmeña, and John Henry Osmeña are all popular Filipino politicians.
Education
He graduated from Colegio de San Carlos in 1892 and continued at San Juan de Letran College. He later joined the University of Santo Tomas to read law.
Facts
He was the first person from the Visaya group to serve as the country’s President.
He was one of the founders of the popular Nacionalista Party.
