About Shashi Tharoor
At a young age of 22, Shashi Tharoor earned his PhD in International Relations and Affairs from Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Tharoor, who is also a noted author, entered the United Nations (UN) as a career official in the same year and by 2001 he had risen to become the Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information. Following his loss of the bid to become the UN Secretary-General in 2006, he retired from the organisation. In 2009, he became a politician in India.
Family Life
He is the eldest and only male of three children born to Sulekha Menon and Chandran Tharoor. He had twin sons from his first marriage to Tilottama Mukherji. After their divorce, he married and divorced two more times.
Achievements
He received the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 1991 and the Sahitya Academy Award in 2019.
Trivia
He is the author of the critically-acclaimed non-fiction book, “An Era of Darkness”.
